Synthesis and Properties of New Superconductors with Cage and Layered Structures

Two different types of superconductors have been developed, Ba-containing silicon clathrate compounds with a cage structureformed by silicon sp^3-σ bonds, and electron-doped layer-structured nitrides β-MNX (M = Zr, Hf; X = Cl, Br, I). The twotypes of superconductors are characterized as compounds having interstices chemically modifiable to enable doping of electroncarriers into the host crystal structures. The Ba-containing silicon clathrate compound Ba_8S_<146> and the Li intercalated β-HfNCl show superconductivity at transition temperatures of 8.0 and 25.5K, respectively.
