Obesity which is the strongest risk factor for type 2 diabetes, is also proposed as one of risk factors for periodontal disease1-4). Although diabetes is a well-documented risk factor for periodontal disease and could be a confounding factor, we clarified the association between obesity and periodontal disease, with a precise assessment of glucose tolerance status using oral glucose tolerance test, in community-dwelling middle aged Japanese women5). Resistin and adiponectin are recently discovered adipokines which are secreted from adipose tissue with postulated opposite functions in insulin resistance6, 7). We studied the serum level of these adipokines between the subjects with periodontitis and those with healthy gingiva.
