Environmental strategies in the automobile industry can be divided into two types: (1) strategies built into the manufacturing and distribution processes, designed to reduce the environmental impact of corporate activity; and (2) strategies built into the products themselves, designed to reduce the environmental impact of product usage and disposal. While the aim is to build environmental awareness into all stages of the life cycle, the single greatest environmental impact in the automobile industry occurs during usage of the product-namely, the impact on urban lifestyles of pollution from exhaust gases. Since vehicle emissions represent a major issue in society, the automobile industry is working hard to develop clean cars using low-energy engines and alternative power sources such as electric motors and fuel-cell batteries. In terms of the product life cycle, the usage stage represents a 'post' process; yet, in order to reduce the environmental impact at the usage stage, we have to incorporate environmental awareness into the initial stages of development, design and procurement. Thus, environmental strategies in the automobile industry must be based on a consistent philosophy and set of standards applicable to all arterial and venous processes.
