From the very nature of their being profit-seeking entities, the fountainhead of the behavior strategy of corporations has traditionally been the increasing of business efficiency--and, essentially, this has not changed over time. Nonetheless, in the process of orienting themselves to the methods of mass production, business corporations have gone overboard in the mass consumption of public goods. As a result, the negative impacts exerted on the environment have come to assume a serious proportion. Environmental degradation resulting from corporate-generated industrial waste materials has--indirectly as well as directly--not only aggravated social costs but also triggered global environmental issues that concern the very survival of mankind. Steps are being taken, albeit belatedly, to rectify this state of affairs. Hence, the need to examine the various problems at issue. Moreover, Japan's response to damage and injuries suffered by consumers due to manufactured products has lagged behind that in the United States and Western Europe. Although product-liability legislation has finally been enacted, one would be justified in concluding that Japanese attempts to come to grips with this problem has only begun to take shape. In addition to such direct forms of dealing with their social responsibilities, there is the question of the contributions corporations could render to society as a way of coping with the criticisms directed at them by the general public. Although having originally developed within the domain of volunteer activities by individuals, an awareness identifying business corporations as social entities has progressively come to take firm hold as more and more Japanese companies began establishing bases of production activity and business operation in foreign countries. Increasingly, attention is zeroing in on corporate social contributions as an instrument of enhancing corporate image in the face of changing consumer perceptions. In line with a few historical facts and background, this paper aims at investigating the points at issue in the area of corporate social responsibilities and contributions.
