In 1967 a new edition of Daniel Jones's Everyman's English Pronouncing Dictionary edited by A. C. Gimson was published. The book will be of great benefit to students of English throughout the world. In this paper I have made a comparison of the 12th with the 13th edition, with comments on it. The contents of this paper: 1 Misprints 2 Eliminations and Additions 3 Deletion 4 Japanese words 5 New words 6 Change in Stress 7 Tendency toward (or against) Spelling Pronunciation 8 Vowels 9 Consonants From a Japanese viewpoint, some improvements and amendments in the choice and pronunciation of Japanese words in the dictionary are to be desired in the future (14th) edition. For example, Nippon (a Japanese word meaning Japan) should be changed to Nippon with stress on the second syllable (which is the pattern adopted in most American dictionaries), if the original pronunciation of the Japanese is to be taken into account. It might be worth while considering the adoption of Nihon [nihɔn] as an alternative. With regard to vocabulary, "Yezo" should give place to "Hokkaido" [hɔkkaidɔ:], which is our modern name of Yezo (an archaic term seldom used in present-day Japan). I wonder why "Satsuma" and "Tsushima" are among the few Japanese words selected in the dictionary. These two words may well be dispensed with in favour of names of big cities like "Nagoya" [naŋoja, (anglicized) na:ŋɔ:ja], or some other words typical of Japanese culture such as "Zen" [zen],"kabuki"[kabu(:)ki] (classical drama),"ukiyoye" [uki(:)jɔ(:)e] (a style of painting and printmaking in the 17-19th centuries) and "ikebana" [ikebana](flower-arranging).
