Frank O. Colby's "The American Pronouncing Dictionary of Troublesome Words" (Crowell, New York, 1950) has many features which are not shared by other dictionaries devoted to American Pronunciation of English (mentioned in Part 1 of this paper). Selecting 3,000 words which are often mispronounced Mr. Colby explains and recommends "standard pronunciation" of these words. His statement is lucid and unequivocal; his argument clear-cut and convincing, though sometimes, as in the case of the recommended pronunciation of "quay", his readers couldn't possibly follow his advice without some misgivings of running to extremes. We Japanese teachers are, and should properly be, conservative in teaching English pronunciation in the classroom, resorting as we do constantly to authoritative dictionaries, though we are well aware of the importance and necessity of acquainting ourselves with prevailing variants of English and American pronunciation. I, for one, have found the author's explanation very stimulative and full of informations regarding current and up-to-date pronunciations of words, which dictionary makers seem to be "under oath not to listen to."
