Measurement of Atmospheric Concentrations of Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Benzene and Toluene in Inland China by Passive Samplers

In rapidly developing Chinese cities, automobile exhaust could be a new emission source of air pollutants in urban atmosphere. Then, authors have conducted field measurements of atmospheric concentrations of gaseous air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO_2), sulfur dioxide (SO_2), benzene and toluene at Chengdu, Sichuan and Harbin, Heilongjian, inland China, by using passive samplers. Concentrations of carcinogenic benzene were successfully determined by the passive sampler in both cities, and increased with increase in those of NO_2, particularly in urban site. These findings suggest automobile exhausts may be a major emission source of toxic VOCs in urban atmosphere. Monitoring of these newly appeared air pollutants should be required for preventing possible adverse health effects caused by the chemicals in China.
