DNA microarray analysis of high pressure effects in Escherichia coil

Hydrostatic pressure is one of the physical stimuli, but the effects to cell have been unclear. To investigate the pressure effects in Escherichia coli, we carried out DNA microarray of E. coli. The results showed pleiotropic effects for gene expression, heat and cold stress responses were induced simultaneously by elevated pressure. Upon temperature stress and other environmental stresses, gene expressions are adjusted to adopt such environments through a change of chromosome. The result also showed the regulation of gene expression through pressure induced H-NS protein which is major DNA-binding protein and maintains chromosome structure. These results suggested that pressure cause to mimic temperature stress in E. coli and the DNA-binding proteins were due to important role to survive under high-pressure environment.
