Current problems of Mongolia's Economy are linked closely with its unique history and geographical position. The IMF-WB reform package has been a failure in Mongolia. The democratization and the transition to market economy have been stalled. What is truly needed for Mongolia is a gradualism rather than the shock treatment. Mongolia's revenues come from mineral deposits, cashmere, remittances from foreign countries, foreign aid and loans. Its economy still retains the pattern of the past colonial economy, which depends on imports entirely for domestic consumption and knows nothing about how to add value to the primary exports. There is little job opportunity domestically. The remittances from foreign countries by Mongolian workers are important for poverty alleviation. The dependence on foreign aid persists throughout the country. What is needed for Mongolia is the unity of national will. A country prospers only if all the people are positive and engaged harmoniously in productive activities. The migratory dairy remains to be the primary industry of Mongolia. The recent horshoo project is an epochmaking appropriate attempt which hopefully will be supported more by the government and applied to every corner of the country.
