Finland is distant from Japan, but is worth studying. It's a country of Linux as well as NOKIA. NOKIA produces 4% of Finnish GDP and its exports amount to 20% of Finnish total exports. NOKIA is No. 1 producer of mobile phones in the world. The rapid successful growth of NOKIA's mobile phones is due to competitive market environments, long cold winter in Finland, and high educational achievements of Finnish people. About ten years ago, around 1990,NOKIA was almost bankrupt due to the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1992,however, the then CEO embarked on a new venture, selling their old business. Since 1992,NOKIA's focus is on telecommunication. Now, it's a truly global company with global marketing strategy, with emphasis on R&D, and cutting-edge high-tech and multimedia. NOKIA now targets wireless communication in the world. Combination of internet with mobile phones is expected to proceed further, which NOKIA regards highly important in the near future. The secrets of NOKIA's success lie in enormous marketing research coupled with R&D strategy, global perspective, stress on China, early adoption of English as intra-company means of communication, emphasis on global standard, flat organization, etc. In these aspects, Japanese companies stay clearly behind.
