Performance studies for MSE-OFDM, OFDM and Single-Carrier systems in frequency selective fading channels(WSANE2006)

The wireless communication systems of the future are likely to require considerably higher data rates and reliability than today's systems. As high data rate services such as video transmission and other data services become popular, the demands on the networks providing these services will increase. It is then very important to find a suitable transmission technique with high spectral efficiency and robustness to various distortions. Recently, a flexible transmission technique with improved bandwidth efficiency and robustness to various interferences, termed Multiple-Symbol Encapsulated OFDM (MSE-OFDM) was proposed. In this paper, performance comparisons are made among conventional OFDM, single-carrier and MSE-OFDM systems in frequency-selective fading channels. Numerical simulation results verify the anti-multipath fading performance of the OFDM system and single-carrier with frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) as well as their disadvantages. However, the CP-reduced MSE-OFDM system has an improved bandwidth efficiency and the FFT size-reduced MSE-OFDM system has more robustness to carrier frequency offset and lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR).
