A cluster analysis of 73 species of the lichen genus Cladonia (s. lat.), based on morphological and chemical data, and a phylogenic analysis of the same species based on the Nu rDNA ITS sequence, are presented, respectively. The use of the species of Cladia aggregata as outgroup gives to large extent incompatible results which do not support any schemes about the genus Cladina and the sections within Cladonia. The characters used in the cluster analysis are interpreted species as whole rather than single individuals. The distribution of characters in the phylogenetic trees is discussed as well as their significance for the identification of monophyletic groups. The generic, sectional, and species concept based on the morphological and chemical difference is reevaluated using the integrative characters that include vegetative, reproductive, chemical, geographical features and the molecular marker. We conclude that the mode of podetium branching, the pigment contained in apothecia and the occurrence of one of usnic, fumarprotocetraric and squamatic acids are the significant characters to distinguish one main group from the other one within Cladonia.
