China is about 9,600,000 square kilometers in extent. At present, about 5,000 lichen species, which include more than 500 endemic species, are estimated to occur in China. Although a few regional lichen floras have been completed, they contain mostly macrolichens and most of crustose lichens are left unstudied. At present a project investigating lichen flora of China is carrying out and the result is expected to publish in a series of works by 2020. It includes full regional works and the Lichen Flora of China (22 volumes in total). Now the total number of specimens accounted in Systematic Reference Collection accessed in China is about 200,000. They are preserved in 16 herbaria distributed in China. These specimens represent 300 genera and 2,200 species of lichens from more than 20 countries. The total number of species approaches one sixth of all known accepted in the ninth edition of the dictionary of the Fungi and half of the estimated number of lichen species in China. Lichen section of Herbarium of Mycology, Academia Sinica (HMAS-L), is the biggest and best one for lichen collection and taxonomy in China. Besides 128,000 specimens, which include 400 species, 2,800 specimens belonging to 30 exsiccatae, and 89 types, 756 cultures separated from lichens are maintained in Genetic and Molecular Resources Collection at HMAS-L, and they represent 22 genera and 51 species. Many specimens collected from China are also deposited in some famous herbaria, e. g. BM, H, LE, PC, TNS, TUR, UPS, W, etc.
