With the objective of clarifying the factors affecting obesity in children, we conducted a study focusing on the eating behaviors of children and their mothers and examining the relationship between these behaviors and obesity. A survey on the relationship of eating behaviors to obesity was conducted using the "Questionnaire on Eating Behaviors", which was administered to a total of 486 children aged from 9 to 15 years and their mothers (including 48 mother-and-child pairs who were visiting a hospital). A child with an obesity index of 20% or more was considered an "obese" child, while obesity in the mother was decided on the basis of the body mass index of 25 or over being defined as "obese". It was found that 44% of the mothers of obese children, but only 8.5% of those of non-obese children, were also obese, the difference between them being significant. Examination of the relationship between eating behavior and obesity demonstrated that, in both obese children and obese mothers, the obesity was thought by a statistically significant majority to be due to body type. Eating behaviors of obese children and mothers were similar. Obese mothers were common among the mothers of obese children, and the eating behaviors of obese mothers resembled those of their children. Moreover, the fact that body type was blamed for obesity by a significantly higher proportion of obese subjects suggested that it was important for educational purposes to alert subjects to the fact that the cause was not body type but eating habits.
