As SIP enabled device are deployed widely, users of these services rightfully expect that their calls are answered efficiently in VoIP scenario. The delay of session setup in SIP depends on a huge number of factors. The most obvious one is the message propagation delay on the transport network. Reliable transport protocols like TCP use their own timers. And SIP uses its own timers for unreliable transport protocols. These timers increase the delay in the case of lost messages. In this paper we evaluate the TCP and UDP as transport protocols for SIP signalling, the call setup time in VoIP scenario is chosen for comparison.
