Specificity and sensitivity of antilymphocyte antibodies (ALA) present in the sera from 24 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 22 patients with other collagen diseases and 21 normal controls were studied by using a microcytotoxicity test and indirect immunofluorescence techniques. Lymphocytotoxic antibodies (LCT-Ab) were found in 88% SLE patients, but the antibodies did not significantly correlate with SLE activity. On the other hand, IgG lymphocyte-binding antibodies (IgG LCB-Ab) were found in 96% sera of active SLE patients and could not be detected in any patients with other collagen diseases except one patient of polymyositis with many SLE components. Furthermore, a highly significant correlation between IgG LCB-Ab titers and SLE activities was observed. On the contrary, IgM LCB-Ab were found in patients with various diseases and normal healthy donors, and were therefore not specific for a certain disease. These data indicate that IgG LCB-Ab titers in the sera of SLE patients are of a great value in the diagnosis and management of SLE.
