In order to understand the experience of someone else, we must focus not only on harmonious relationships but also on painful conflicts. According to Sartre's study about being-for-others, one experiences this in two ways. In one way, he feels a drain hole opened in his world by the other-as-object. In the other, he feels looked at by the other-as-subject. This article is a case study on what we call "delinquent children's" experiences with pain. These children had hardly ever met others who understood them. This study shows that, consequently, such children usually meet care givers as objects in the home, although sometimes care givers emerge as subjects for them. For example, a care giver's scolding fixes them. Like all of us, they often waver between both types of experience to avoid being transcended and hurt. And sometimes these avoidances prevent them from actually receiving the care givers'words. However an abrupt break in continuity made by internal negation accompanied by pain can enable them to receive the words of others which are addressed to their hearts. This elucidation therefore suggests that those experiences may allow them future positive experiences with others.
