The present study reports a communication intervention with a mother who has a chief complaint of communicative difficulties with her non-speech child with mental retardation. I tried to support that she could modify her communication behaviors to her child by herself, and the teaching was conducted using videotape feedback and self-recording procedure. In videotape feedback, the mother was presented with a videotape that recorded the mother playing with her child under a free play situation and in self-recording, the mother was required to record communication behaviors between mother and her child in a daily life situation. After 18 sessions were conducted, the mother could modify her communication behaviors appropriately and she also could understand her child deeper. Conseguently, the mother could communicate with her child to meet her child's intention, and their communication behaviors were remarkably improved. Based on these results, it was considered that videotape feedback facilitated to change mother's communication behaviors and self-recording influecord her understanding of her child. These changes were discussed from a view of relationship and it was suggested that these self-monitoring procedures were effective for mothers who have communicative difficulties with their children.
