In this research, the examples of the sacred place and the belief facilities in southwestern Japan were investigated. On the basis of it, the factor of the sacred place establishment was studied. The main results are as follows. The origin of the sacred place in various places is an ancestor's grave, a Shinto shrine, a Buddhist temple, a holly mountain, etc. The influence of asceticism on the sacred place is large in the Chugoku, Shikoku and northern part of Kyushu. In the Shikoku sacred place, as is seen from the custom that people visit Koyasan after the pilgrimage, the relation with esoteric Buddhism is Strong. However, the distribution of sacred places differs regionally and the sacred places are few in the Southern part of Kyushu. Though it is not cal1ed the sacred place in Okinawa, and a lot of pilgrimage manners and customs, including the pilgrimage of the king's sage marks, are seen in the people. Belief facilities related to the sacred place vary from temples to forests. As for the sacred place, relations with the esoteric Buddhism sect distribution are seen. Though the Buddhist temples are few in the Ryukyu Islands, the transformation of the belief facilities related to the sacred place is seen. Esoteric Buddhism, etc. and a traditional belief mixed in Okinawa and the former festa facilities changed into Udaki shrine in the Sakishima Islands. At the first stage of the sacred place approval, the statesmen went on a pilgrimage to the founder's sage mark, and the various place communities went on a pilgrimage to the ancestor's ground. These religion and administration were imitated, and a pilgrimage came to be done as a seasonal event also in the people. On the other hand, there are forest wandering and peak-round training in esoteric Buddhism and asceticism. When the syncretization of Shinto with Buddhism advanced and the sacred point obtained universality, the sacred place was established. In addition, the sacred place in the buddhist temple was given the soul as an entrance to the paradise, and that led to the development of the sacred place. As stated above, the sacred place pilgrimages are considered to be based on the religion and administration in the society and the forest training of the individual. If it could be the case that these had developed into private manners and custom, it might correspond to the change of the major sacred place pilgrimage from Kumano and Saigoku sacred place pilgrimage to the Shikoku pi1grimage.Therefore, a regional difference of the sacred place in southwestern Japan may be recognized as an age difference of development.
