• NINOMIYA Kunijiro the founder of Matsuyama-shinonome school was born in the samurai class, the KATAGAI family who was subjected to the lord of the Bitch-Matsuyama clan in 1860. At that time the social chaos of the end of the Japanese feudal ages began. The feudal system didn't work well. The Tokugawa shogunate as the central government and the clans as the local government had lost public administrative ability and fell into a severe financial crisis. The Bitch-Matsuyama clan had also fallen into that crisis. However the new lord ITAKURA Katsukiyo totally reformed the clan using a scholar of Confucianism, YAMADA Houkoku, as the administrator of the clan in 1850. He perfectly achieved the reform in a decade and the clan revived powerfully becoming rich and strong. The lord ITAKURA Katsukiyo decided to support the declining shogunate with his clan's power. He was promoted to be Rohjyu(the highest administrator of the shogunate) in 1862. This was possible because the ITAKURA family was a retainer of the TOKUGAWA since its distant ancestors. During the infant days of NINOMIYA Kunijiro, glory had covered the Bitch-Matsuyama clan in spite the severe social confusion and civil wars covered all over Japan in that time. Bitch-Matsuyama clan was much like "the light in the darkness" as Bible describes. We believe that the spiritual growth of NINOMIYA Kunijiro must have been strongly influenced by the social and mental circumstances of Bitch-Matsuyama clan.
