A projection X-ray microscope was constructed by modifying a scanning electron microscope, HITACHI S-2500CX. The resolving power of the microscope was calculated to be about 0.1μm. To demonstrate the performance of the microscope, photogrphs of two species of diatom were taken with the microscope ; structures less than lμm were observed fairly clearly. The microscope was then applied to take photographs of the whole body of an aphis and sporangia of a fern and also to take stereo-pair photographs of Golgi-stained sections of rat brain and pig liver. It was shown that the microscope was useful to inspect inside structures of optically opaque biological materials and to observe three-dimensional structures of animal tissues.
