Production of an fcc Al_<95>Ce_1Fe_4 Powder by High Pressure Gas Atomization and Hardness of its Hot-pressed Products((A)Amorphous Alloys)

An fcc Al-Ce-Fe powder with a particle size fraction smaller than 25μm was produced by high-pressure helium atomization of an Al_<95>Ce_1Fe_4 alloy with the highest mechanical strengths in fcc Al-Ce-Fe alloys. Hot-pressing of the fcc powder at 713 K causes a fully dense material in which the original fcc supersaturated structure remains almost unchanged. The hot-pressed material has high Vickers hardness values, e.g., 200 at room temperature and 140 at 573 K. The preparation of nonequilibrium Al-based bulk materials with the desirable characteristics (high room-temperature and high-temperature hardnesses) by warm consolidation of the fcc supersaturated solution powder is attractive as a method of developing a light-weight alloy with heat-resistant strengths.
