Tantalum is produced by electrolysis of the fused salt containing potassium tantalum fluoride, alkali halides and tantalum oxide. The use of a straight halide bath usually results in the appearance of the anode effect. For the purpose of eliminating this, tantalum oxide was added to the bath. The equilibrium diagrams of the systems, KF-K_2TaF_7 and KCl-K_2TaF_7 were made and the systematic determination of the solubility of tantalum oxide in the above systems was carried out by thermal analysis. In the system KF-K_2TaF_7, the complex KF.K_2TaF_7 was formed and the system had two eutectic points, 68 wt% K_2TaF_7 at 725℃ and 94% at 697℃. On the system KCl-K_2TaF_7, the complex KCl.K_2TaF_7 was formed and the system had two eutectic points, 57% K_2TaF_7 at 696℃ and 95% at 697℃. Two per cent of Ta_2O_5 dissolved in KF at 856℃ and less than 0.1% KCl at 900℃. The system Ta_2O_5-KF-K_2TaF_7 formed a ternary eutectic point at 7% Ta_2O_5, 30% KF, 63 K_2TaF_7 and 722℃. The solubility of Ta_2O_5 m KCl-K_2TaF_7 increased in proportion to the concentration of K_2TaF_7.
