Quercetinsulfonic acid forms complexes with germanium in neutral and acidic solutions, and their absorption spectra have the absorption maximum at 400 and 450mμ respectively. In order to determine by which group quercetinsulfonic acid reacts with germanium, the reactions between flavonoids and germanium were studied spectrophotometrically. In strongly acidic solution, quercetinsulfonic acid, quercetin, morin, flavonol and 3-oxy-4'-methoxy flavanone reacted with germanium, but hesperidin and 3, 4-dioxy-4'-methoxy flavane did not react. In neutral solution, quercetinsulfonic acid, quercetin and rutin reacted with germanium, but morin, hesperidin, flavonol and 3-oxy-4'-methoxy flavanone did not react. It was considered from the above results that flavonoids reacted with germanium by ortho carbonyl-hydroxy group in strongly acidic solution, and by ortho diphenol group in neutral solution. In strongly acidic solution, kojic acid which have an ortho-carbonyl-hydroxy group also reacted with germanium.
