Spectrophotometric Determination of Germanium with Quercetinsulfonic Acid

3, 5, 7, 3', 4'-pentahydroxyflavon-6'-sulfonic acid (quercetinsulfonic acid) was readily soluble in water and it formed greenish yellow and yellow complexes with germanium in neutral and strongly acidic solutions respectively, which were also soluble in water. The complex formed in neutral solution was used for the determination of germanium in aqueous solution in this study. If the concentration of quercetinsulfonic acid was kept at 3.8×10^<-4> M/l and the pH in the range from 5.6 to 6.2, Beer's law was obeyed at least in the concentration range of germanium from 0.13 to 1.06 γ/ml, and the molar absorption coefficient was calculated as 51, 700 in 400 mμ. By matching carefully the pH of both solutions of sample and reference, satisfactory results were obtained in the pH range from 5.6 to 6.6. The absorption spectra of quercetinsulfonic acid-germanium system showed an isosbestic point at about 369 mμ at pH 6.5, and from this result it was found that only one complex was formed under these conditions. By studying the composition of the complex by the Job's method of continuous variations, it was found that it was GeR_3.
