Manganese revealed its spectal line at 403.4mμ when it was excited by oxygen-hydrogen flame and its intensity was measured with Beckman model DU spectrophotometer. The intensity of this line was affected by various factors. Hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and especially sulfuric acid depressed the emission. The intensity dropped till the molar ratio of sulfuric acid to manganese became to about 1 : 1. Phosphoric acid also depressed its intensity until the molar ratio of phosphorus was about 2 : 3. Alkali metals and alkali earth metals intensified the manganese emission, while aluminium, copper, chromium and nickel weakened. Fram these results the rapid determination of manganese in ferromanganese alloy was proposed.
