• The metalations of glycine anhydride, N, N'-diacetylglycine anhydrlde and N, N'-dibenzoylglycine anhydride in liquid ammonia have been conducted and then the benzylations and methylations of these metal compounds in the same solvent have been also conducted, using benzyl chloride and methyl iodide. These reactions were completed in very short time at room temperature and N, N'-dibenzylglycine anhydride being produced in the yields of 30-60 per cent. In the case of the benzylation in organic solvents, benzene was a only solvent giving a fruitful reaction. The benzylation of N, N'-diacetylglycine anhydride and the methylation of glycine anhydride gave negative results, respectively, and the products were nothing but the original materials. The solubilities of glycine anhydride and N, N'-dibenzylglycine anhydride in liquid ammonia have been measured. The above results on the alkylation in liquid ammonia have been explained by assuming two reaction mechanisms.
