Pulverizing experiments were carried out on several kinds of metals at various temperatures above room temperature. The pulverizing mechanism and the shape of pulverized powder were studied as the function of temperature. At high temperatures, especially above the recrystallizing temperature, the deforming exfoliation was found to play a major role in the pulverization mechanismus ; the exfoliation by fatigue increased with the lowering of temperature and it was scarecely recognized above the recrystallizing temperature. The sintering of pulverized powder occurred above the recrystallizing temperature and it caused an apparent decrease of pulverization. A lowering of pulverization efficiency was found at the temperature at which the pulverizing mechanism transformed by fatigue from the exfoliation to the deforming exfoliation. It was also observed that the exfoliation by fatigue produced the larger powder than that produced by the deforming exfoliation. The present results show that the pulverizing temperature must be chosen according to the size of powder required.
