In many developing countries, regional voluntary associations or migrant associations do exist in metropolitan areas. Researchers have paid much attention to the roles of the associations that help their members or migrants to adjust to the conditions of the urban life and to be integrated with the society. Referring to the literatures about the voluntary associations in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, I will submit some working hypotheses about the changing of the structure and roles of regional or migrant associations in association with the progress of urbanisation process in Cairo, Egypt. Analyzing the quantitative data of "private voluntary associations" (gama'iiya in Arabic), the trends of the change in 1950's and the recent years in Cairo have been identified.
