To estimate of exercise intensity during mountain hiking, frequency distribution of heart rate and specific gravity of urine were investigated. Eight male (60.4±4.5yr) and 12 female (54.5±6.8yr) subjects participated mountain hiking to Mt. Sangun (935.9m). Mean heart rate and peak heart rate during hiking were 122.3±11.0 and 157.8±12.5 beats/min, respectively. The peak heart rate was 97.6±8.2% of maximal heart rate. There was a significant difference between the specific gravity of urine (SG) before (1.023±0.006 ) and after (1.030±0.004 ) hiking (p<0.01). The frequency histogram of heart rate showed three normally distributed sub-populations which correspond to low (population1), moderate (population 2) and high (population 3) exercise intensity. Proportion of the three populations were 16.8±10.3%, 54.0±10.3% and 29.2±11.2% of all frequency of heart rate during hiking, respectively. Also, there were no relationships between SG and mean or peak heart rate during hiking. And, there was no relationship between SG and the distribution 1. Yet, there were significant relationships between SG and the rate of distribution 2 (r=-0.566,p<0.01) and distribution 3 (r=0.634,p<0.01), respectively. These finding indicate that the rate of frequency distribution of heart rate is an effective means to determine the intensity of mountain hiking, regardless of mean heart rate or peak heart rate.
