Nathaniel Hawthorne's The American Notebooks is a collection of notes he took in private. In the notebooks, we can find some impressive descriptions of the sea near which he lived. But we scarcely see the sea described in his literary works. This essay focuses on the repression which occurs in the process of transmuting private notes into public works. Through the comparison between expressions in notes and those in works, what is not written proves to imply Hawthorne's profound insight into the modern age and society, which is sure to cast great light on what is written in his literary works.
