DE-INTERLACING METHOD USING RECURSIVE AND BI-DIRECTIONAL INTER-FIELD INTERPOLATION(International Workshop on Advanced Image Technology 2006)

De-interlacing which conversion form interlaced scanning to progressive scanning is necessary for flat panel display. It is also useful for a picture format conversion include temporal-vertical processing. In de-interlacing, a motion compensation for inter-field interpolation is useful to improve the picture quality of motion area. To realize motion compensation, recursive method using converted frame to progressive scanning and bi-directional interpolation are proposed. At first, we compare the performance of these methods. We propose a new de-interlacing using both methods rationally. In proposed method, the recursive method is used mainly for motion estimation. Bi-directional method is used for interpolation by the motion vector from recursive method. Finally, we compare the original progressive scanning picture with the de-interlaced picture. The proposed de-interlaced method gives better than both conventional methods in subjective quality.
