The nonlinearly generated second harmonic component in a focused sound beam detected by a concave receiver placed beyond a solid plate, has been analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The amplitude and phase of the fundamental and second harmonic components in the focused sound are significantly affected by the plate thickness and driving frequency as well as the acoustic property of the plate. Primarily due to the second harmonic generation after the transmission through the plate, the influence of the insertion of the plate on the magnitude of the nonlinear second harmonic signal differs significantly from that on the magnitude of the linear fundamental or double-frequency sound. This causes the difference of contrast in the nonlinear image from that in the linear image obtained with a transmission-type acoustic microscope.
