Geographic Variation in Morphological Characters of the Alpine Apterous Grasshopper, Zubovskia koeppeni parvula (Orthoptera, Podisminae)

We examined morphological differentiation among five isolated populations of the alpine, apterous grasshopper, Zubovskia koeppeni parvula. Factor analysis suggested that characters of genitalia were distinguished from the other characters in the intensity of correlations. Canonical discriminant analysis showed that hind femur length contributed most to the morphological differentiation among populations. Discriminant analysis classified most members of four populations correctly into the populations to which they belong. There were significant differences in the allometric coefficients of hind tibial length among populations. Geographic variation in the allometric coefficients of hind legs, which is also found in another brachypterous grasshopper, results possibly from natural or sexual selection acting in different directions among populations.
