Gall-invading Behavior of Eriosoma Aphids (Homoptera, Pemphigidae) and its Significance

Eriosoma aphids form leaf-roll galls on Ulmus species. Newly hatched fundatrices (gall makers) often invade galls induced by other conspecific fundatrices or allospecific ones. Why and how larval fundatrices invade other galls was investigated. When fundatrices encountered galls on shoots they had arrived at, most of them invaded the galls immediately. Fundatrices which had once failed to form galls hardly intruded into other galls. Thirteen galls with 2 fundatrices were experimentally produced. In allospecific galls invaders suffered a great decrease in fecundity. This decrease was supposedly due to interference competition with the gall maker and/or its offspring rather than the exhaustion of food resources. Analyses of alate fecundity showed that the amount of food in a gall was not affected by the colony size. There was no evidence that gall-invading behavior is advantageous to the fundatrices of a species when this coexists with other Eriosoma species.
