Distribution Pattern of the XO/XX and Neo-XY/neo-XX Chromosomal Races of the Brachypterous Grasshopper Podisma sapporensis (Orthoptera : Acrididae) in Hokkaido, Northern Japan

• Cytological observations revealed that a chromosomal race with a sex determination system of XY/XX is included in the grasshopper Podisma sapporensis distributed in Hokkaido in addition to a race with a standard sex determination system of this genus. The standard race has a sex chromosome composition of XO/XX, with the diploid chromosome number being 23 (NF=23) in males and 24 (NF=24) in females. The XY/XX race is characterized by a diploid chromosome number of 22 in both males and females. It is probable that the XY/XX system resulted from X-autosome translocation, with the original acrocentric X-chromosome being altered into a metacentric neo-X chromosome. The XO/XX race is distributed in the western part of Hokkaido, while the distribution of the neo-XY/neo-XX race is restricted to the eastern part of Hokkaido. Hybridization between the two chromosomal races may have been hampered by geographical barriers such as Mts. Daisetsu and the Hidaka Range.
