Decision-Making in a Mason Bee, Osmia cornifrons (RADOSZKOWSKI) (Hymenoptera, Megachilidae) : Does the Mother Bee Fertilize Her Eggs Depending on Their Sizes?

In Osmia cornifrons each mother bee makes up to six nests, and partitions eggs among these nests. The sex distribution in each nest is composed of a series of ♀♂ type, i.e., females are disposed toward the inner part and males toward the outer part of nests, irrespective of the order in which the nest was made. MAETA (1978) surmised that such characteristic sex distribution was determined by the ovulation rhythm, with a gradual decline in egg size from large to small. However, such a gradual decline of egg size did not always occur in all nests numbered according to descending nesting order, in the present study. The sex of eggs may be determined voluntarily, irrespective of their sizes.
