In nests of Osmia cornifrons, the cells for females were disposed at the inner part and those for males at the outer part of tubes. The fertilization of eggs is determined voluntarily by mother bees. The number of cells per nest gradually decreased as the females aged. Parallel with that, the number of males produced per nest increased, reflecting weakened parental investment. The fecundity of smaller females proved to be remarkably inferior to that of normal sized females. Mother bees seem to bias the sex ratio toward males as they aged in order to maximize their reproductive success.
