The aim of the study was to evaluate the fluoridereleasing ability of the experimental polyurethane elastomers and the relationship between fluoride concentration in the elastomers and the acquired acid resistance rate (AR) of human enamel. Experimental elastomerics were made of polyurethane elastomer sheet containing SnF_2, respectively 1.25wt%, 2.5wt%, 3.75wt% or 5.0wt%. Thirty-two enamel blocks from extracted molars were divided into four groups at random. Each enamel block was cut into two slabs, one of them set with the experimental elastomer as test, the other as control not set with the elastomer. The enamel slab was stored in 2 ml de-ionized water for 10 days. The de-inoized water was changed everyday. Ruoride ion in the 2 ml de-ionized water was measured. Then the enamel slab was artificially decalcified for 72 hours. The mineral content was measured by microdensitometry. The AR was calculated from mineral loss (△ Z). Result: The amount of fluoride released from the 5.0wt% elastomer was the greatest and it was smallest from the 1.25wt% elastomer. AR ranged between 50% and 70% for the four kinds of elastomers. Only between 1.25wt% and 5.0wt%, however, AR was significantly different (p<0.05).
