Recently Co-Cr alloy and Pd alloy have often been used as porcelain fused alloys instead of conventional gold and Ni-Cr alloys. This study investigated the relationship between the bonding strength of porcelain and the characteristics components, the surface roughness of the oxide layer produced after the degassing process and the wettability of porcelain using these two alloys. 1. The oxide layers of each alloy were formed by the major components and transfusing trace additives to the surface. These addttives consisted of PdO, SnO_2,CuO_2,and CuO in Pd alloy and of CoO, CrO_3,Cr_2O_3 and MoO_2 in Co-Cr alloy. 2. The surface roughness of the oxide layer thus produced was 6. 6 μm for Pd alloy and 6.5 μm for Co-Cr alloy at a magnification of 100 times. However it was 0.1 μm for Pd alloy and 0.08 μm for Co-Cr alloy at a magnification of 20000 times. A uniform oxide layer was produced on the Pd alloy surface, but a nonuniform oxide layer partially covering the surface of Co-Cr alloy was observed. 3. The surface tension of the porcelain used in this experiment was 326 dyn/cm. The contact angles between the porcelain and the two alloys were always less than 90 degrees. The contact angle between the porcelain and the Pd alloy was smaller than that of Co-Cr alloy (56.0-63.0 degrees between the porcelain and Pd alloy and 60.0-68.0 degrees between the porcelain and Co-Cr alloy). Adhesion between the porcelain and alloys, as calculated from these data, was slightly higher for Pd alloy (490 erg/cm^2) than that for Co-Cr alloy (467 erg/cm^2). It was suggested that the wettability of porcelain to Pd alloy was slightly more superior than that to Co-Cr alloy. 4. The results of the shear tensile strength test of Pd alloy were about 1.5 times (24.1 MPa) that of Co-Cr alloys (15.1 MPa). The bonding strength correlated with the components, the surface roughness of the oxide layer and the wettability of porcelain to alloy. 5. This tendency agreed supports the theory that as wetting improves the surface becomes rougher when the contact angle is 90 degrees or less.
