Kinetics of Magnetic Relaxation and Determination of Activation Energy in High-T_c Superconductors

The deviation of magnetic relaxation from the usual logarithmic decay in type-II superconductors was analyzed in terms of the first-order kinetic relaxation process. The theoretical and experimental results show that the relaxation of magnetic induction B obeys the power law equation, namely, B=B_0+B_1t^<-α>, where B_0 is the "equilibrium" value of the magnetic induction, and B_1 and α are field- and temperature-dependent constants. It was found that α, which is related to the pinning potential barrier, varies with temperature following the Arrhenius-type thermal activation behavior. Based on the present phenomenological theory, the current J dependence of the apparent activation energy U_a is discussed by using the relaxation data of a Bi_<2.1>Sr_<1.8>Ca_<1.0>Cu_<2.0>O_<8+δ> single crystal.
