Superlattice in YBa_2Cu_3O_x Single Crystal Induced by Absorption of Water Vapor

Structure changes in a single crystal of YBa_2Cu_3O_<6.4> caused by absorption of water vapor have been investigated by the X-ray diffraction method. The diffraction measurements showed that a superlattice twice the original c-axis formed after the absorption. One half of the cell length is 13.69 Å, which is larger by 16.3% than the original length of the c-axis. The lattice constants a and b showed a slight change and were close to each other in value. On the other hand, the breadth of the (00l) reflections increased more than twofold that before the absorption, although the (h00) and the (0k0) reflections remained sharp. It is thought that the absorption induces anisotropic strain.
