The circular polarization difference Raman spectra of iodine dissolved in several organic solvents were observed in order to investigate the molecular motion in solution. The Raman bands of iodine measured by the method of difference spectra are distinctly asymmetric in shape in cyclohexane and carbon tetrachloride, and almost completely symmetric in dichloromethane and benzene. In the latter solvents, the reorientational motion of iodine is considered to be a rotational Brownian type. The asymmetry observed in the former solvents has been interpreted as an indication of the weak survival of O, S branches of iodine arising from the free rotation. It has been shown that a quantum mechanical treatment can simulate the observed asymmetry.
