It has been demonstrated that the intensity and depolarization characteristicsof resonance Raman effect can be advantageously used to determine theorientational order parameters in liquid crystals. The second and fourth orderparameters in nematic MBBA have been obtained at the temperatures near thenematic-isotropic transition point, by measuring the depolarization ratios of aresonant Raman line of /7-carotene embedded in the liquid crystal. The result hasbeen discussed by comparing with those of previous works on neat MBBA, andalso the validity of the mean field theory has been investigated.
