Effects of Corona Discharge on the Formation of Electrically-Extracted Liquid Jets

Liquid jets can be extracted from drops when a strong electric field provokes surface instability. The influence of corona discharge from liquid surfaces in air on the dynamic process of jet formation is studied experimentally. A drop of distilled water or KCl aqueous solution is situated at a high voltage metal needle tip and its motion is photographed, with the associated current change being recorded simultaneously. The liquid conductivity ranges from 2.5×10^<-4> to 2.5 Sm^<-1>. Steady jet emission is observed only when positive voltages are applied, and the manner of emission depends strongly on the conductivity of the liquid. The polarization force and the corona space charge are identified as the most significant factors affecting jet formation. Some characteristics of jet formation, such as jet radii and jet deformation with associated current change, are discussed in conjunction with these factors.
