Lanagmuir-Blodgett (LB) and vacuum-deposited (VD) films of vautadyl tetra t-butyl phthalocyanine (VOTBP) were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and UV-visible spectroscopy to reveal their film structure and molecular organization. Both types of films of VOTBP indicated a weaker intermolecular force than other metalphthalocyanine films, as determined by UV-visible spectroscopy. XRD data showed that the LB films possessed a long-range order. VOTBP in the LB films were oriented perpendicular to the glass substrate, as evaluated by the angular dependence of EPR spectra. VOTBP in the VD films were oriented parallel to the substrate. The linewidth of EPR spectra indicated a two-dimensional spin chain in the LB films and a three-dimensional spin chain in the VD films. The order parameter evaluated from the magnetic parameters of EPR spectra exhibited a moderate degree of ordering in both types of films. This evidence indicated that the balance between the intermolecular force in VOTBP and the surface force from the substrate determines the variety of molecular orientations. The moderate degree of ordering of both types of the films is due to the weak intermolecular force as well as the dipolar interaction of VOTBP.
