Fabrication and Structure of Langmuir–Blodgett Films of Nitrostilbene

Using the dilution technique of the developing solution as well as the flow-orientation method, we successfully fabricated a well-ordered Langmuir monolayer and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of 4-dimethylamino-4$^\prime$-nitrostilbene (DANS). The dilution technique of developing solutions allows formation of a two-dimensional film of DANS below a certain concentration. The flow-orientation method enhances the molecular orientation in the monolayer by means of a moving barrier. X-ray diffraction (XRD) suggested that the DANS monolayers form the tilt stacking in the LB films. Ultraviolet visible (UV-VIS) spectra of the LB films showed a peak shift to the shorter wavelength as compared with those of the DANS solution. The blue shift of the UV-VIS spectra reflected the enhanced molecular packing of the nitrostilbene chromophore. Both the XRD and UV-VIS data are indicative that DANS tilts to the substrate normal.
