The cathode fall voltage in a fluorescent lamp is investigated under operation frequencies of DC, 50 Hz and 43 kHz. The cathode fall voltage is measured by a probe technique, from the discharge voltage at a short electrode distance. The obtained effective values of the cathode fall voltage are about 11 V, 10 V and 6 V for DC, 50 Hz and 43 kHz, respectively. The reason why the cathode fall voltage is low under 43 kHz operation, in which the electrode heating loss is smallest, is explained as follows. Jon space charges in front of the electrode always exist under high-frequency operation. Thus, the discharge current is always concentrated at the cathode-spot position. Therefore, the cathode-spot position is efficiently heated even with small heating power.
