A simple derivation of the stress-strain relation in plasticity from the microscopic point of view is given. For simplicity, only macroscopically homogeneous and isotropic solids which are in thermal equilibrium with a larger system and subjected to uniform external forces are considered. Furthermore, dissipation, time-dependent properties and quantum effects are neglected. The displacement of each molecule (or of each cluster of molecules) in a solid is described by the displacement of a few corresponding nodal points in a large coherent flexible network. Then, with the physical properties of dislocations included, the equivalent network is treated statistically by using the classical equilibrium statistical mechanics. Although such a simple theoretical model is used and many non-trivial simplifications are made in the derivation, qualitative agreement is found between the derived and experimentally measured stress-strain relations.
