Resonance of Phase Oscillations in a Synchrotron

A possibility that accelerated electrons in a synchrotron escape beyond the region of stability in their phase oscillations owing to fluctuations of operating parameters of the machine was calculated. The results predicts that the non-linearity of the oscillations has the most important role in this problem, especially in AG machine, and that there are resonance between the oscillations and the fluctuations when the frequency of fluctuations takes a value of 0.6∼0.7 times that of the phase oscillations, as a principal mode with a rather wide frequency spread. The analyses were compared with the results of the experiments in which the external perturbations were imposed on the amplitude of the accelerating RF voltage in Todai 170 MeV AGS. Their consistence was rather good.
